Turning education and skills policy into practice

Driving theory tests

AlphaPlus was appointed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to provide educational consultancy for the driving theory tests.  Around two million tests are taken each year.  The assessments are all delivered on-screen in test centres across the UK.  The assessments themselves include multiple choice questions, case studies and innovative video-based hazard perception assessments.  Our work for DSA has included:

  • performance monitoring of the assessments used to assess drivers involving quantitative and qualitative analysis of test and item performance,  and candidate pass rates.  The assessments cover car drivers, bike riders, driving instructors, lorry and passenger transport vehicle drivers.
  • design and construction of balanced test forms
  • training, advice and support for the DSA authoring team on question writing, including multiple choice, case study/scenario, and hazard perception assessments.
  • consultancy advice on assessment and e-assessment.

The DSA’s primary aim is to promote road safety in Great Britain, through the advancement of good driving standards. In particular, the DSA conducts theory and practical driving tests for car, motorcycle, bus and lorry driver candidates, and sets the standards for Approved Driving Instructors and Compulsory Basic Training for motorcyclists.
